Why SCAN Now?

What, Why, and Who are SCAN?

SCAN -- the Sarasota Citizen Action Network -- arose from a growing concern that public planning

in Sarasota has lost perspective, proportion, and a public vision.

Many areas and neighborhoods in Sarasota County are threatened by the impacts of incompatible development.

Voices of residents are not reflected in repeated approvals of development and comprehensive plan amendments.

SCAN's mission is to amplify residents' voices across a network connecting citizen groups and residents across the county, because we -- residents of Sarasota County -- don't have a hundred planning issues - we all share one

At this moment, three beloved iconic places are facing proposals from powerful developers -- plans that would drastically transform what makes them uniquely expressive of Sarasota County.

These three well known areas are not alone in facing degradation by poor planning. These problems face every neighborhood as it tries to protect and preserve its special integrity in the face of exorbitant profiteering.

Thesy embody qualities that residents consider essential to the identity and character of Sarasota County:

1. Siesta Key - Mega-Hotels

Siesta Key Community - Lourdes Ramirez

No Mega Hotels (FB)

2. The Celery Fields  - DR Horton wants to build 171 homes next to the nesting area - lower right - the Smith Farm on Raymond Road.

Sarasota Audubon - Jeanne Dubi, Kathryn Young, Rob Wright

3. Old Miakka  - Rex Jensen, Pat Neal wish to expand Lakewood Ranch

Keep the Country Country - Mike Hutchinson, Susan Schoettle

The same developer-oriented planning affects neighborhoods all around Sarasota County, as many HOA's, environmental organizations and advocacy groups like Control Growth Now have long understood.

Remember: We county residents don't have a hundred planning issues - we all share oneTogether our voices will have greater impact on protecting Our Sarasota County.
