SUNCOAST ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS THANK-YOU BRUNCH SEPTEMBER 21

WSLR-Fogartyville, Generating Earth Connections, and the Unitarian Universalist Environmental Justice Committee (Green Team) of Sarasota Florida are bringing together Suncoast environmental area organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship. Some of the organizations have been active for more than 50 years; some are brand new. Organizations in Sarasota, Charlotte and Manatee Counties are at the core of those invited. Invitees include a few organizations from Pinellas, Hillsborough and Lee County. The event is open to all who are interested in making a difference in our environment.

The Suncoast Environmental Leaders thank-you brunch and program will begin at 9 a.m. and be over by noon. It will be held at Unitarian Universalists Sarasota Center, 3975 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, Florida 34232.  A vegetarian brunch will be served.

Confirmed speakers include Tom Matrullo and Susan Schoettle.

Tom Matrullo is a social justice advocate and a prominent local advocate. He was previously a journalist with Sarasota Herald-Tribune, and most recently the founder of Sarasota Citizen Action Network (SCAN). Matrullo publishes two blogs: SCAN: Sarasota Citizen Action Network https://scansarasota.blogspot.com (a journal of what is happening now) and Citizens for Sarasota County: https://citizensforsarasota.blogspot.com/ , a searchable chronicle of local issues and events over the past 10 years.

SCAN focuses on the County’s Planning methodology with the aim of arriving at a balanced relationship between our communities and the natural environment. Matrullo will offer an update on the current Celery Fields situation and, as a Board member of WSLR-Fogartyville, will share his insights of the power of community and coalitions.

Susan Schoettle is President of Keep the Country, Inc., and co-founder of SCAN. A former Sarasota Assistant County attorney, she has developed a map of the County’s development hotspots, which she will be sharing. Schoettle is a practicing attorney, a citizen activist and works against unreasonable and damaging overdevelopment.

Invitations are going to over 100 area environmental organizations to gather at the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church on Fruitville Road to enjoy a complimentary vegetarian brunch and program. The goal is to bring together people seeking sustainable solutions and working for a greener tomorrow to foster connection, communication, and collaboration. A full list of invitees is included below. If you would like to be invited to this event, please send information to BowieFAICP@gmail.com and put Suncoast Environmental Leaders in the subject line.

“One voice about environmental matters is more powerful when it is made of many voices,” Mary Anne Bowie, of the UU Green Team, said “and our hope is to foster further collaboration in the region.”

The purpose of Generating Earth Connections is generating connections with committed people, who make a positive impact on the environment and humanity. By exploring and sharing synergies, the community is stronger, more creative, and more effective. Unitarian Universalist Environmental Justice committee (aka UU Green Team) is inspired by the 7th Unitarian Universalist principle which states: “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” WSLR is a center for creative expression and community engagement that amplifies the voices of our diverse community, and promotes peace, sustainability, democracy, and economic and social justice.   \
